I studied painting and drawing at the Julian Ashton Art School, Sydney, from the mid to late 1980s. After leaving the school I became fascinated by making dolls and puppets. By the late 1990s, my cloth ‘dolls’ were life-size with wire armatures, needle-sculpted and oil painted faces and then I started to apply tissue paper maché to them.
In 1995 I enrolled at university and studied Italian and English literature. It became an all-absorbing passion, particularly my research into the medieval poet Dante Alighieri and visual art took a back seat. In the 2000s I was writing fiction and non-fiction and had opened an art school along the lines of the one I had attended. When I was offered a block of teaching in a high school I closed the art school. Since then I have returned to making visual art, have been illustrating picture books and been involved in publishing. Now I would like to re-establish my visual art practice. |
